Table of Contents

As teachers and administrators gear up for the new school year, it is crucial to spend back-to-school budgets effectively to ensure the best possible learning experiences for students. So how do educators ensure they are making informed decisions when allocating budgets while also addressing the challenges of finding reliable academic-based products?  That’s what we plan to help you with.  Additionally, we will discuss the importance of considering Industry 4.0 as you choose products for budget spending and define their significance.

The Importance of Considering Industry 4.0 in Budget Spending

Industry 4.0: what is it?

As educators decide how to allocate their back-to-school budgets, it is essential to consider the concept of Industry 4.0 and its impact on education. Industry 4.0 refers to the integration of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT), into various industries. In the context of education, Industry 4.0 emphasizes the need for equipping students with the skills and knowledge required to thrive in a technologically advanced society.

Maximizing Budget Spending with Industry 4.0 in Mind

The rate of change is happening too fast for businesses, government regulations, and educational institutions to keep pace. STEM jobs are expected to increase 10.9% by 2026 and we aren’t ready!  When choosing products for budget spending, educators should consider the following factors to align their investments with the necessary skills for  Industry 4.0:

Technological Integration

Look for educational products that incorporate advanced technologies, such as coding platforms, virtual reality applications, and interactive learning tools. These resources can help students develop the digital literacy skills necessary for the future workforce.  A few of my favorite tools that incorporate these technology skills are Wonder Workshop’s Class Connect, Merge EDU, & BirdBrain’s Owlet Math Manipulatives.  Each of these products keeps academics at the forefront while truly integrating the technology rather than just gamifying and making things fun. They add true value and use the technology to truly enhance learning.  When integrating technology this can sometimes be a hard balance to achieve.

Technological Integration in Learning

Collaborative Learning

Consider products that promote collaborative learning environments, mirroring the teamwork and problem-solving skills required in Industry 4.0. Look for products and platforms that enable students to collaborate and communicate effectively, both in person and online.  A product that has been a long-standing favorite of mine is 3DuxDesigns.  This product is spot on at centering its lessons around collaborative, project-based learning.  If you follow me, then you know by now that I am a firm believer in project-based learning.  By pairing project-based learning with collaborative learning you accelerate and elevate both learning and engagement.  Not to mention, the life skills value that these products afford students are more advanced than any similar product, bar none!

Although 3DuxDesigns is not a platform or a highly technical product it is definitely geared at teaching collaboration and preparing students for Industry 4.0.  With the rise of Industry 4.0, it is essential that we equip our students with the ability to collaborate and adapt to the changing landscape of technology. That’s where 3DuxDesign’s lessons are very strong!

3DuxDesign is not simply a tool for creativity, but a company with lessons that foster collaboration among students. By using their innovative and intuitive design components, students are encouraged to work together, brainstorm ideas, and build upon each other’s strengths. This collaborative environment allows students to develop crucial interpersonal skills that are invaluable in Industry 4.0.

One of the key principles of Industry 4.0 is the integration of technology and robotics within various industries. By pairing 3DuxDesign kits with something such as HummingBird kits or Crazy Circuits Bit Board kits, students have the opportunity to learn and apply these principles in a hands-on manner. By designing and constructing their own functional models, students are introduced to the concepts of critical thinking, problem-solving, and technological literacy – all crucial skills needed to thrive in the industries of tomorrow.  Check out this Equitable Playgrouns lesson to see how these skills can be applied while also incorporating social-emotional learning.

Additionally, Kai’s Clan is another one of my favorites.  It is a product that incorporates AR, VR, and Collaborative, project-based learning.  It is truly an all-inclusive STEAM toolbox for the classroom.  Not to mention, the price point is very budget-friendly, especially for all of its functionality and the grade span it covers.  It is a great way to keep budgets down by covering loads of skills and grade levels with one reasonably priced classroom robotics kit.

Adaptive Learning

Explore adaptive learning platforms and tools that personalize the learning experience based on individual student needs and progress. These products leverage technology to provide tailored instruction and feedback for optimal learning outcomes.  This needs to be platforms or products that truly assist in student learning.

KaiBot is a great robot that recently hit the market and is wonderful for visually impaired students.  KaiBot combines unplugged coding with coding cards or use KaiBot along with Blockly or Python programming, which delivers alongside an engaging immersive virtual environment.  It offers expertly designed Braille coding cards that convey coding principles tactically, enabling blind students to understand algorithms through touch.  Additionally, students can touch the KaiBot to each Braille card and translate the code into screen-free actions.  For a more technologically immersive experience, students can pair KaiBot and get screen-reader feedback and experience virtual worlds!

Often I find that anything that gives feedback is used as an adaptive learning tool.  Really consider what value it is providing to the students and if it actually personalizes their learning.  Gifted, or academically advanced, students are most often the group left out in these product lines.  I encourage you to strongly consider them in your choices as well.

Data-Driven Decision Making

Invest in products that utilize data analytics to track student progress and inform instructional decisions. These tools allow educators to identify areas of improvement and provide targeted interventions, optimizing student growth.  Don’t forget to support teachers on how to best make use of this data in order to assist students.  Otherwise, the data is useless.

Real-World Connections

Seek products that emphasize real-world connections and expose students to authentic industry examples. This can include virtual field trips, interactive simulations, or partnerships with local businesses for hands-on experiences.  3DuxDesign, CoDrone EDU, & Kai’s Clan do a very good job of making real-world connections in their lesson plans.

You can take virtual field trips with products like VR Expeditions 2.0.  If you haven’t dipped your toes into the world of virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) yet, you and your students are missing out!

If this is your first time experimenting with AR and VR and are looking for a starting point, check out these articles to get you started: How to Access AR and VR in Education Today and AR and VR in the Classroom.  VR and AR experiences can support and enhance learning in all subject areas by engaging the senses and immersing students in “real” experiences far beyond the four walls of the classroom.

Merge EDU allows students to learn science more tangibly by offering over 100 science simulations they can touch, hold and interact with! Merge provides a viable alternative to physical teaching aids which can reduce your overall science budget significantly while simultaneously increasing student engagement.  That’s a definite win-win!

Take real-world learning even further by incorporating career exploration.  Career in STEM is one of the best and most thorough teaching tools that I have found for career exploration in the classroom.  With the power of the Career in STEM Explorer Platform curricular and career information is easily accessible and highly useful for both students and teachers.
