Teach Kids to Handle State Test Stress

Table of Contents

In our relentless efforts to prepare students for state testing, it is crucial to acknowledge that success encompasses more than just acquiring subject knowledge.  Success encompasses more than just students taking state tests without becoming overwhelmed. While managing stress during state testing is essential, true success goes beyond that. Success includes students feeling confident in their abilities, utilizing effective learning strategies, persisting through challenges, and demonstrating a growth mindset. It also involves students retaining and applying knowledge, showing critical thinking skills, and achieving their academic goals. Additionally, success encompasses students’ overall well-being, including their social and emotional development, resilience, and self-belief. When students not only excel in state testing but also grow as individuals and learners, that is when we can truly say they have achieved success.

That’s where SuperDville comes in — a mission-driven company focused on social and emotional learning. In this article, I will share my insights on how five SuperDville episodes can assist educators in helping students develop confidence, embrace unique learning strategies, cultivate resilience, and manage stress during the high-pressure period of state testing. Let’s dive in!

What is SuperDville?

SuperDville is a video-based Social-Emotional Learning curriculum that empowers children with learning disabilities to recognize and manage their big feelings. This program teaches students a range of strategies, tools, and coping skills that can be used both at school and at home. By addressing the unique needs of students with learning disabilities, SuperDville ensures that these children also receive the necessary support to navigate their emotions effectively.

1. The Power of Confidence: “The Confidence Hat” EpisodeSuperDville Confidence Hat

As seasoned educators, we know that confidence plays a pivotal role in students’ success during state testing. The “Confidence Hat” episode showcases how Jace, after being gifted with a magical hat that supposedly gives him confidence, discovers that the confidence has been inside him all along.  I encourage you to incorporate a similar activity in your classroom, where students create their own confidence hats. By decorating the hats with symbols, colors, and words that represent their strengths and capabilities, students can boost their self-assurance and belief in their testing abilities.

2. Unleashing Creativity and Learning: “Suzie Sings and Jack Horner” Episode

We all know that students have diverse learning styles and preferences. In the “Suzie Sings and Jack Horner” episode, Suzie and Jack demonstrate various learning strategies that can help our students retain information effectively. I urge you to use this episode as inspiration to encourage your students to explore their preferred learning styles. By providing a variety of learning experiences, incorporating music, visual aids, and hands-on activities, we can help our students engage with the material in a way that resonates with them, leading to better retention during testing.

3. Encouraging Resilience and Growth Mindset: “Never Give Up” Episode

State testing preparation can be challenging, and setbacks are not uncommon. In the “Never Give Up” episode, Jace faces disappointment but ultimately embraces resilience and a growth mindset. I invite you to utilize this episode to foster a growth mindset among your students. Let’s remind them that intelligence and abilities can improve over time with effort and dedication. By encouraging students to view setbacks as opportunities for growth and providing strategies for overcoming obstacles, we can inspire them to persevere during state testing.

4. Managing Stress and Building Resilience: “Stress” EpisodeSuperDville stress management

State testing often brings increased stress levels for our students. In the “Stress” episode, Kaylee experiences anxiety while preparing for her role, but Juniper steps in to help her manage stress through positive self-talk. I encourage you to incorporate stress management techniques from this episode to support your students during state testing. Teach them how to develop positive self-talk, engage in relaxation exercises, and practice mindfulness to alleviate stress and maintain focus during this high-pressure period.

5. Utilizing Strategies for Stress Management: “Stress Mess” EpisodeSuperDville Identifying Emotions

In the “Stress Mess” episode, the SuperDville gang explores various strategies and activities to de-stress. You can draw inspiration from this episode to incorporate stress management techniques into your classroom. Brief meditation or breathing exercises, yoga stretches, and physical activities can help students redirect their energy, reduce anxiety, and promote a more relaxed and focused state of mind, essential for optimal performance during state testing.

Incorporating SuperDville Episodes Into Classroom Practices:

Building Confidence:

Following the “Confidence Hat” episode, I encourage you to engage your students in confidence-building activities specifically tailored to state testing. Set achievable goals, review past successes, and encourage positive self-talk. By helping students recognize their capabilities and instilling belief in their testing abilities, we can enhance their confidence and overall performance.

Catering to Diverse Learning Styles:

Inspired by the “Suzie Sings and Jack Horner” episode, incorporate diverse learning strategies into your test preparation. Provide opportunities for auditory, visual, tactile, and kinesthetic experiences to cater to different learning styles. This will enable your students to engage with the material in ways that optimize their comprehension and retention during state testing.

Fostering Resilience and Growth Mindset:

Building on the lessons from the “Never Give Up” episode, let’s promote resilience and a growth mindset during state testing. Encourage students to reflect on their learning journey, celebrate progress, and view challenges as opportunities for growth. Create a supportive classroom environment where mistakes are seen as part of the learning process, further reinforcing this mindset.

Teaching Stress Management Techniques:

Drawing from the “Stress” and “Stress Mess” episodes, integrate stress management techniques into your classroom routine. Provide students with tools such as deep breathing exercises, stretching, and mindfulness activities to help them manage test-related stress and anxiety. Equipping students with lifelong stress management skills extends beyond state testing.

By incorporating SuperDville episodes such as “The Confidence Hat,” “Suzie Sings and Jack Horner,” “Never Give Up,” “Stress,” and “Stress Mess” into your classroom practices, you can empower your students for state testing success. These episodes not only enhance students’ academic performance but also promote their overall well-being and self-belief during this high-pressure period.
